Yohji Yamamoto Women Spring Summer 2016

Yohji Yamamoto’s mainly black collection was accentuated by jolts of red in his SS16 show.  The designer created a distinct sense of moodiness as he sent his models down the catwalk clad in head to toe black, with random sections of their hair dyed tomato red.  Make up was kept minimal; models were pale, with lines of red resembling scars running down their faces.

Yamamoto’s skill was demonstrated through his tailoring; clothes were fashioned into structural masterpieces, which created interesting shapes around the models’ bodies.  Far from being boring as one might expect from a mainly all black collection, Yamamoto’s designs were edgy and felt avant garde and experimental.  The only relief from the all black ensembles was the dishevelled model wearing an unexpected red wedding style dress, complete with distressed detailing.  Yamamoto has certainly cemented his position as the prince of noir and darkness.
