Born: Paris, France, 1967

Isabel Marant’s parents split while she was child, leaving her dividing her time between the two households. Growing up a tomboy, childhood trips to India, Asia, Africa and the Caribbean influenced her and her later style.

In 1982 Marant requested a sewing machine from her father. Surrounded by a girlish style popular in Paris at the time, Marant rebelled from the look and embodied a tomboy style, reworking old army jackets creating her own bohemian style.

Marant began to design clothes with a friend, Christophe Lemaire, in 1985. Together the saw modest success and the venture encouraged Marant to enrol at the Studio Bercot fashion school to study design.

After graduating, Marant began an apprenticeship with Michel Klein in 1987. The following two years she collaborated with Bridget Yorke and assisted art director Mark Ascoli, working on projects for Martine Sitbon, Chloé and Yohji Yamamoto.

In 1989 Marant launched a small jewellery collection. The following year she launched Twen, a knitwear label with her mother.

Marant launched her own label in 1994. Aiming to create clothes she herself would buy, her designs saw inspiration from her childhood encounters and the effortless, tomboy cool she oozed was infused into trophy jackets, simple mini dresses and sleek pants.

In 1998 Marant launched a new line in Japan, I*M. The same year she guest designed several collections for French catalogue La Redoute. In 1999 she debuted a further line, Étoile, at Prêt-a-Porter Paris. The lower priced lined focussed heavily on T-shirts and jeans.

In 2002 Marant collaborated with Beautiful People by DIM on a line of lingerie. Two years later she added a children’s line to her label. She embarked on further collaborations in 2006, this time working with Anthropologie.

Isabel Marant has developed a style that’s enviable. Her Otway studded biker boots sparked a buying frenzy in 2010 for the label that’s known for exclusivity. The native French style, blended with a bohemian, tomboy chic, is captured effortlessly in her designs. Effortlessly hip, Isabel Marant has become known as the go to label for Parisian cool.
