Rick Owens

Rick Owens Women Spring Summer 2016

Rick Owens is no stranger to controversy – one of his catwalk shows involved male full frontal nudity – but his bizarre and sometimes grotesque statement of having models wearing other models overshadowed some of his pieces. What was designed to shock and cause controversy certainly succeeded, but also looked ridiculous – and obstructed the view from the actual garments of clothing. One could not help but feel sorry for the models hanging upside down and red-faced, probably through a combination of blood rushing to their heads and embarrassment.

Rick Owens’ love of the avant garde is demonstrated through flesh coloured bodysuits, silk tops in oyster colours, and chunky gladiator style sandals in black and nude. His dresses were misshapen and made up of different materials, colours, and textures; black leather jackets were structured to look asymmetrical and distressed. He has certainly cemented his position as the Prince of Gothic by his inclusion of human accessories, which is clearly an anti-establishment statement, but the overall effect is one of pretentiousness and trying way too hard.
