Menswear trends for fall/winter: what’s hot in accessories

Bags – backpack’s back

Everybody: the backpack is back, but this time around it’s all about utility details and slick finishes. At Calvin Klein Collection, Italo Zucchelli set the tone with models wearing olive green, gray and khaki backpacks that matched their clothes, while Kit Neale in London pulled off a similar matchy-matchy trick. Leather is a key material and Versace served up some eye-catching options too, which were worn with buttock-baring chaps (you can leave that part of the equation out). You don’t need to break the bank: the high street has some great options — COS has a streamlined leather and mesh bag for €99.

Hats

Fall-Winter has been all about chic cocooning for a couple of years now and the FW14 shows were no different. Fendi went with fur hats, and like Maison Martin Margiela, used the material on warm coat collars, while Marni also sent out fur and cashmere mittens. On the high street, as on the runway, beanies are another key trend. At AMI they were worn high up on the head rather than pulled down tight. A burgundy Richard James version (€126) from Mr Porter could be the ticket to a happy winter: handknitted in Ireland in Merino wool it also fits this season’s brooding color palette perfectly.

Scarves

Burberry sent out runway wraps worn over one shoulder (and ready to be flung around the other when it gets inclement). Elsewhere the main scarf story is the return of the article formerly known as the snood like APC’s Yuki model at €50. Also going under the ‘tube scarf’ moniker, these pieces are a practical addition to your winter wardrobe and perfect for anything that involves speed and the open air (having to cycle back and retrieve a scarf from a wet puddle is never a good look).
