Lady Gaga to Play Donatella Versace on American Crime Story

Lady Gaga will reportedly be playing Donatella Versace in the third season of American Crime Story. The ten episode series will focus on the murder of Donatella’s brother, Gianni, a death that shocked both the fashion world and wider community.

Gianni was shot in front of his Miami Beach mansion, Casa Casuarina, on 15th July 1997. The killer, Andrew Cunanan, murdered at least five people over a five-month period and committed suicide eight days later with the same gun used to shoot the designer. It remains unclear as to why Cunanan chose to target Versace but the show promises to provide an emotional and thought-provoking look at the tragedy.

The series is said to be based upon Maureen Orth’s book, Vulgar Favours. The executive Producer, Ryan Murphy, is believed to have got the idea after working with Lady Gaga on two seasons of American Horror Story, for which she won a Golden Globe.

The first instalment of Murphy’s anthology, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson, was wildly successful. The executive producing team all won Emmy Awards for their outstanding work and as a result the next two have been fast-tracked. Season two will be based upon the horrors of Hurricane Katrina and the Versace story will follow for season three.

Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace have worked very closely together in the past. The two often feature on the red carpet together and Gaga starred in the Versace’s Spring 2014 campaign with Donatella’s signature long platinum hair. Lady Gaga also paid homage to the designer on her Artpop album with a song named ‘Donatella’. With such a close working relationship it is no wonder that Gaga was picked for the role, as it is one that undoubtedly touches her heart.
