Knives, helmets among creations by CFDA Swarovski nominees

The 2013 nominees for the CFDA and Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent were feted at New York City fashion  boutique Fivestory on May 21, ahead of the ceremony on June 3.

The designers were each tasked with creating a different ‘objet d’art’ using Swarovski Elements crystals. Creative duo Cushnie et Ochs chose to produce a set of crystal-embellished knives: “they’re just sleek, badass objects,” explained Cushnie to Style.com.

Meanwhile, menswear designer Tim Coppens was in a more safety conscious mood, offering up a Swarovski-studded Ducati crash helmet, while NYC-based fashion label Suno created a stunning crystal cactus.

“We were thinking about what would be unusual and what would be fun, and ultimately, the most beautiful things come from a place of contrast,” said Suno’s Erin Beatty.

Fivestory has the nine different pieces for sale now, with proceeds going to non-profit arts organization Free Arts NYC. Prices range from $250 for Todd Snyder’s crystal sneakers to $2,500 for Public School’s glittering BMX bike.
