Demna Gvasalia is New Creative Director for Balenciaga

After three years as the creative director for Balenciaga, Alexander Wang presented his last show for the house this season, in a parade of soft white looks. Demna Gvasalia was selected as the new creative director for the house, a Georgia-born designer who graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Belgium. Gvasalia previously worked as creative designer first at Louis Vuitton then Maison Margiela, before taking the position of head designer at the collaborative label Vetements.

Though he is taking on the great responsibilities required as creative director for Balenciaga, Gvasalia has confirmed that he will not be leaving Vetements behind, but will still have a hand in the label as, “This is a label and a project that I am committed to for a lifetime.”

First with Nicolas Ghesquière, followed by Alexander Wang, and now with Gvasalia, Balenciaga has shown a trend of creative directors with a passion for designing street-style clothing, a trend that has both invigorated the house and increased profits in the past several years. Gvasalia’s own style of design leans towards more unconventional, urban streetwear that has curated a following of both celebrities and fashion aficionados alike – and with any luck, this success and following will translate into his work at Balenciaga.
