Cole Haan celebrates 1928

Posted on

Launching this week, the “Born In 1928” campaign by Cole Haan fêtes the brand’s 85 years of history in a series of black and white snaps.

The images feature four esteemed octogenarians: art-house photographer Elliott Erwitt, poet and holder of the Presidential Medal of Freedom Maya Angelou, Apollo mission astronaut Jim Lovell, and model (and muse to Richard Avedon) China Machado. The formidable foursome were, of course, all born back in 1928.

Erwitt, Angelou, Lovell, and Machado were styled by fashion editor Tiina Laakkonen and shot by fashion photographer Daniel Jackson, wearing customized Cole Haan shoes. “They are all vibrant examples of how timelessness and true style are born out of confidence – and that never expires,” Cole Haan’s vice president of marketing Erin Riley told WWD. “They are as relevant today as they were in the past, and they all represent various perspectives that we thought would resonate with our consumer.”

“I am a human being, nothing human can be alien to me,” says Dr Angelou in her minute and a half long video, during which she also recounts a story of the time she sang a spiritual song to a raucous Egyptian crowd, and even repeats the performance.

The full video campaign is also available on the Cole Haan website and YouTube channel, with print ads hitting the November issues of major fashion magazines.
