Spring-Summer 2011 – English punk-rock met the French can-can. How the two coincide is something one can wonder, but Gaultier did so in an overwhelming way in his S/S 11 collection. Punk fashion in the guise of Mohawk wigs accessorised the ruffles, frills and flounces in a can-can manner. Everything in this collection had a punk veneer, corroborating evidence would be an outfit named ‘Vicious’ decorated with chains and studs, albeit draped over a black crepe sheath with a flounce of tulle for the can-can effect. Studded biker jackets were teamed with chainmail t-shirts and fishnet skirts. The complex tailoring Gautier is renowned for shined through with his intricate corsetry and silk brocade tuxedo suits. Necklines were strapless, asymmetrical and one shouldered.
