Carolina Herrera Takes on New Creative Talents

After a short trial period wherein Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia acted as consultants for Carolina Herrera during her pre-fall 2016 collection, Herrera made the decision to hire the two full-time. Kim will be the senior vice-president of design, while Garcia will be consultant. This hire comes on the heels of the unexpected departure of the previous creative director Herve Pierre and two other designers earlier this month.

“I met Laura a long time ago and when she left Oscar de la Renta, I wanted her to be on my team,” said Herrera regarding the new hires. “I know their work because they worked directly with me on the pre-fall collection, and so when they were ready to join the company, [they did]. And I am very happy to have them both.” Herrera also confirmed that she will remain the creative director, and that this change in designers does not signal a change in the house’s style or direction. “As you know, fashion changes, there is a change all the time.” Herrera stated, “And this is a new phase… But it’s not that I’m doing something totally different. We are in the same style of the house of Carolina Herrera.”

Kim and Garcia also have their own business as well, together designing their line Monse. Prior to their appointment at Carolina Herrera the two worked together for Oscar de la Renta. Kim, who spent 12 years with the house, posthumously presented de la Renta’s final collection after his 2014 death.
