Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren Woman Spring Summer 2017 – Ralph Lauren joined the ranks of several designers who have chosen to take the see-now, buy-now approach to fashion week. One of the most prominent American fashion houses, Ralph Lauren showed a decidedly western collection today, playing up the heritage of the brand.

Plaid and embroidered pinstripes opened the collection, a leather bag slung over the model’s shoulder in a laid-back look. Fringed suede hangs from jackets, ponchos, dresses and sweaters; one brown sweater features a panel of suede with woven details and fringed sleeves. A leather flight jacket is layered over a silky, woodgrain patterned dress, detailed with metal studs at the neckline. While elaborate decoration and ranch hand details abound, a number of simple, elegant pieces endure through the collection – a skirted, strapless black jumpsuit, a one-shouldered white dress, wavering from the sleeve to drop along the body, revealing layers beneath.

Though mainly black and white, the collection ends with eight jewel-toned looks; shimmering evening and cocktail dresses, accessorised by large metal earrings and thick leather chokers. A magenta jumpsuit under a matching fur coat, feathers sprouting along the collar and lapel, shocks compared to the more unassuming pieces that preceded. A sapphire blue suit, worn only with layered silver necklaces beneath, holds to the western theme with a sultry, classic impression to boot.

Flapper fringe, classic shapes and tailored lines brought the collection out of a spaghetti western and into the now. Heavy silver jewelry decorated necks and belted looks, while ridgetop and gambler cowgirl hats topped many. Weaving and studs give texture to leather, which in turn festoons everything from dresses to belts. Ready to wear (and for purchase) as early as tomorrow, this thoroughly Americana collection will surely set a precedent for the effectiveness of the see-now, buy-now technique.
