Comme des Garcons Women Spring Summer 2016

Designers hailing from Japan are known for their love of the avant garde, and Rei Kawakubo of Comme Des Garcons is no exception to this.  Her show for SS16 was designed as a spectacle, with structural pieces ballooning out and mostly concealing the models’ arms.  Impractical for daily life, certainly, but the show made for a wonderfully wacky viewing.

Kawakubo is one to favour concept over pragmatism, and while her clothes are amazing to look at, more resembling pieces of art than garments to be worn, they sometimes border on the ridiculous.  A coat made up of different pieces of blue fabric knotted together ended up looking brash, while one coat was designed to levitate above the shoulders concealed half the face of the model wearing it.  Kawakubo’s quest to design pieces of wearable art was at times glorious; feathers adorned coats which splayed out into wonderful shapes, but it was at times counter-acted by the more bizarre pieces.  However, Kawakubo is so creatively confident that her concept is one to be admired.
