西洋棋格花样由网格似的多个方块组成。这些方块使用交替颜色、花样或纹理创造出鲜明的对比。许多时候只有黑白两色可以用来创造西洋棋格效果，这也是西洋棋格这一名称的由来，现在也有一些其它颜色可以用来印制西洋棋格花纹，印刷是制作西洋棋格面料最常见的方法，同时也有色织制成的。
