How to build the perfect ski-to-après wardrobe

Posted on

Skiing has always been as much a fashion event as a sporting one. The trick is dressing for the cold by day and for the bar by evening without packing your entire wardrobe. A few well-chosen pieces can do both jobs. Get the balance right and you’ll look as good on the chairlift as you do over drinks.

1-Start with Stylish Performance Layers

Warmth comes first, so begin with a close-fitting thermal base layer and well-cut ski trousers. A plain rib-knit top or half-zip in black, cream or stone looks clean beneath a jacket and just as polished once the outer layers come off indoors. Moisture-wicking fabrics also keep you comfortable when you head straight from the slopes to a cosy lodge. Quiet, neutral shades for the foundation leave brighter outerwear and accessories free to do the talking, and they make mixing and matching across a week far simpler.

2-Give Vintage Ski Style a Modern Update

Classic ski fashion is firmly back. Marie Claire names retro ski knits among the season’s leading trends, from Fair Isle to chevron-yoke designs, and styles them with jeans or corduroy instead of full technical kit. Follow that lead and wear one nostalgic piece at a time. A roll-neck or colour-blocked jumper beside modern trousers feels chic, whereas a head-to-toe throwback can look more like fancy dress.

3-Plan Outfits That Work for the Whole Trip

On ski holidays, the same outfit often has to cover a morning on the piste and an evening in the village. Pack fewer, better pieces: a fine knit, sleek thermal tops and one standout jacket. Once the lifts close, add boots and jewellery, and a simple base becomes something dressier. Because everything is chosen to work together, you’ll spend less time deciding what to wear and more time enjoying the view.

4-Make Outerwear the Statement

A ski jacket needn’t be purely practical. Look for a belted shape, a glossy finish or a bold colour that gives your outfit personality against the snow. Practicality still matters, so check for a snug hood, taped seams and enough room for layers beneath. Later, a faux-fur or shearling-style coat brings a little retro mountain-resort drama to the evening, and it keeps you warm on the walk between the chalet and the restaurant.

5-Finish with Après-Ski Accessories

Accessories are the quickest route from sporty to sophisticated. Vogue Scandinavia’s ski guide points to neck warmers, sunglasses and a fluffy aviator hat as easy ways to add character. Leather gloves, a knitted headband or statement earrings work in the same way, lifting a simple outfit and giving it a glamorous, resort-ready finish.

A great ski wardrobe is about choosing pieces that work hard from the first lift to the last drink. Start with sensible layers, add one vintage-inspired item and finish with accessories that make the look your own.
