Autumn-Winter 2012/13 – Mountains were the influence for Rick Owens AW2012 collection which allowed him to focus on a sportier man but he too struck upon the importance of the suit. This theme can have many connotations, in this Owens focused on the vulnerability of man versus mountain, how he needs to rely on outer garments in order to achieve his goal. Lightweight jersey and cloth shirts and a variation of converse style running shoes were what started it off, but these felt like the showcasing of undergarments. He moved quickly on to cold icy colours like pale blue silk scarves, pastel silver jackets and cashmere knits with tight high collars made one think of being in the Himalayas or mounting the summit of Everest. Large draping collars swung around necks like a scarf and long john style trousers, fabrics that could protect you from the elements and quilted jackets stuffed fat with down, these were the clothes one needed in order to climb ones mountain, and that was certainly true for Rick Owens.
