Jean Paul Gaultier

Jean Paul Gaultier Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2016 – Sleepwear was one of the immediate themes brought to mind in this latest collection from Jean Paul Gaultier, offering luxurious examples of pajamas, smoking jackets, robes and more. The show opened with a black robe and pajama pants, outlined in white piping; the model’s nails were painted a vibrant red to match her lipstick, with one hand cooly planted in the pocket and the other clutching a cigarette.

A belted jumpsuit followed, featuring a relaxed, crimson rope at the waist along with a cinching buckle. Following the loungewear came broad-shouldered suits and hourglass silhouettes, button down shirts with black ties, and vibrant prints and colors. One long black dress of floral lace is seen worn over a long white button down, accessorized with a checkered tie and clutch, and black gloves. Slinky gowns were paired with sporty jackets and large jewelry between lavish jumpsuits and the intermittent torso cage.

Color, shape and style referenced 1980’s fashion, whether in the pillbox hats strapped over high-volume curls, padded shoulders and menswear silhouettes, or the use accessories such as ties and suspenders. Between the occasional clutch, models were accessorized with cigarettes and containers of liquor. While several pieces seemed more suited for a costume than for a contemporary look, others maintained more classic lines and silhouettes that will appeal to a modern patron.
