Pimple patches: Are they worth the hype?

Posted on

Pimple patches, which first rose to popularity in South Korea around a decade ago, have now become a global trend. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are changing the narrative around skincare and beauty; gone are the days of being shamed for having spots or feeling the need to cover acne with heavy makeup. Instead, younger generations are wearing pimple patches in bold colours and fun shapes, happy to highlight, rather than conceal their skin’s flaws and blemishes. But what actually are pimple patches? And do they really work beyond the hype?

What Are Pimple Patches?

Typically, a pimple patch is a small adhesive sticker that comes in a variety of different shapes, sizes and colours. Pimple patches contain various active ingredients and can be either medicated or non-medicated.

Non-Medicated Pimple Patches

Most non-medicated pimple patches are made with hydrocolloid. They work by preventing bacteria from entering broken skin, and discouraging picking or squeezing. These patches also help to absorb excess fluid, such as pus from the pimple, creating a clean environment for healing. They can also help to flatten pimples and reduce inflammation, making them appear less obvious and ‘angry’.

Medicated Pimple Patches

Some pimple patches contain additional ingredients alongside hydrocolloid, to tackle stubborn acne and calm irritated skin. Patches containing salicylic acid are a popular option, as well as natural remedies such as tea tree and witch hazel.

Benefits of Pimple Patches

So, are there any benefits to using pimple patches, you may be wondering?

Acne has multiple causes, and dermatologists caution that pimple patches shouldn’t be seen as a miracle cure. Users should always check the ingredients before applying a patch as some can cause irritation, particularly if you have sensitive skin. However, when used properly, pimple patches can aid with skin healing.

Here are some of the potential benefits of pimple patches:

– Pimple patches absorb fluids (including pus) which helps to promote healing in a clean environment.

– Pimple patches prevent harmful bacteria and germs from entering open wounds.

– Pimple patches discourage picking and squeezing, which can help to reduce scarring and allows pimples to heal quicker.

– Pimple patches are suitable for most skin types.

– Pimple patches are a healthier alternative to covering open wounds with heavy makeup, which can irritate skin and exacerbate acne due to blocked pores.

– Pimple patches can boost confidence by covering blemishes while they heal, and encouraging people to accept, celebrate and nurture their skin and natural beauty.

How to Use Pimple Patches

Pimple patches need to be worn for a few hours or overnight to be most effective. Before application, make sure the area is clean and dry as this will allow the patch to adhere to the skin. Patches work best on ‘open’ spots, as this allows the ingredients to penetrate the skin, so you may need to wait for a spot to erupt first. Then you can simply cover the pimple with the patch and let it do the work!
