Yesterday, Nike announced their collaboration with designer Olivier Rousteing on a line of football, or soccer, gear. Known as the young designer at the helm of the Balmain fashion house, Rousteing has added an unexpected line to the story of his work, in the form of a collaboration with NikeLab titled, “NikeLab x Olivier Rousteing: Football Nouveau.”

While the collaboration does not contain the same flash and glamour one would expect from Rousteing’s work, there is still an alluring elegance to the gold-detailed pieces. “Fashion is usually about the catwalk and the glamour, but with Nike it was about performance and the athletes,” Rousteing explained in a press release for Nike. “What I love about this collection is that we are integrating the iconic style of football into sport style.”

Four styles of athletic shoes will be among the pieces available, as well as the “NIKELAB N98 JACKET X OR,” a streamlined, zippered jacket for both men and women – though the women’s design also doubles as a body-con dress. Other designs include the “NIKELAB TOP X OR,” a take on the classic football jersey, sweatpants, shorts for me, and a cropped top featuring the Nike logo emblazoned in gold across the chest.

Black and sporty, the pieces feature smart gold details, including the piping, zippers, patches, and of course the classic Nike swoosh. One cannot help but be reminded of the athletic wardrobe of the Hunger Games films.

“Olivier was obsessed with the complete look,” said NikeLab Senior Apparel Design Director Jarrett Reynolds in the same press release, “making sure each piece worked together — not just within the men’s and women’s collections, but also between the two. At every design review, he’d ask, ‘Would a football player really wear that?’ That question helped keep the collection rooted in sport.”
