Dion Lee to Design Sydney Opera House Uniforms

The Sydney Opera House has announced that Dion Lee will be designing the new uniforms for its team of 600 employees next year. CEO of the Sydney Opera House, Louise Herron , is reportedly looking forward to work with the designer, whose work is often inspired by Australia’s most famous building.

“Dion is one of Australia’s brightest fashion stars whose work draws so beautifully on the sculptural elegance of Utzon’s masterpiece. It will be wonderful to work with him to create a new uniform collection for the people who bring that place to life,” she told Vogue Australia.

“Meeting the needs of the Opera House’s very diverse workforce and making sure the clothes combine elegance and utility, inspiration and practicality is critical. It is important that a cultural icon such as the Opera House projects an image that parallels the architecture of the building,” said Lee on the project.

The announcement preceded Lee’s resort 2018 show on Sunday, which was presented at the Sydney Opera House to mark the opening of this year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. This is the fourth time Lee has chosen to show at the location.

“I first visited the Opera House as a child to see theatre and contemporary dance and I have been a regular ever since…I’m truly honoured to be working with the Opera House and its staff to design their new uniforms,”said Lee.

The design and manufacturing process is expected to take around 12 months to complete.
