Adidas Originals by Mary Katrantzou results in colorful, feminine pieces

Set to hit stores on November 15, the sportswear brand collaboration with Mary Katrantzou gave the designer something of a challenge:

“When adidas first approached me, I took time to think about what I could offer that’s different, what I could say through the collection that they haven’t said before,” explained the emerging talent who is still only in her early 30s.

Her answer (in the form of a range of ready-to-wear apparel and footwear) seems pretty self-assured, taking technical elements from the sportswear brand’s aesthetic and turning them into colorful decorative prints.

The shapes mix the sporty aesthetic with an interest in feminine beauty, cut close to the body. Pieces include a coat dress, mini-dresses and track jackets in a range of fabrics, and embellished sneakers (which, while perfectly gym-ready, are going to be a fashionista hit) inspired by track shoes from the 1970s and 1980s which helped athletes onto the podium.

“I wanted this collection to be more democratic because what I do every day is niche and it’s about luxury; it’s great to be able to translate my work into a product more people can enjoy,” added Katrantzou.

Recent Adidas Originals collaborations have included link-ups with Japanese menswear label Neighborhood, UK singer Rita Ora, and American musician Pharrell Williams. Katrantzou has previously collaborated on capsule collections with Topshop and shoes with Gianvito Rossi.
